Elaborately Carved Victorian Solid Oak Revival Hall Table.
This is another of those pieces that I'll remember for years to come. An absolutely stunning Victorian solid oak revival Hall table with an elaborately carved frieze, single long drawer with brass dolphin drop pulls, and raised on turned and fluted legs.
The carving to the drawer front features the face of a man enclosed in a central cartouche bearing the word 'winter'. Either side of the face are carved fruits and foliage, and as such, I believe the man is possibly the Greek god Dionysius, since he is '... god of the grape-harvest, winemaking, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre.' he sounds like a bit of a legend!
The table is in superb condition. It has had a very light and sympathetic restoration, including a good wax all over. The top bears some very minor marks, all commensurate with the age of the piece and which only serve to add to the patination and character. Altogether, an absolute stunner!
