Antique Mahogany Kneehole Desk

Absolutely stunning Georgian - moody - kneehole desk with one long drawer over six short drawers, seperated by the classic kneehole cupboard, all raised on bracket feet.l with absolutely stunning figured mahogany throughout. 
 
Why moody? It was common in the early 20th century that antiques dealers and restorers would carve up Georgian chest of drawers and convert them into kneehole desks as can be seen here. At the time these were worth considerably more, and so the investment in time to perform the transformation was a worthwhile persuit. The main problem with such endeavors was that, more wood was required for the drawers - since a 4 drawer chest would now be a six or seven drawer piece - and the dividers between the kneehole, and indeed, the kneehole cupboard door, would require considerably more sheet wood, ideally to match the exterior.
 
With many such pieces, identification of such a transformation can be as easy, or a difficult as the conversion was for the skilled carpenter. Often, you'll see drawers with dovetails only on one side, and there are various other clues. In this case, the drawers have been very well matched, and the craftsmanship is excellent. The giveaway is the timber used for the kneehole section. While still being antique, it has a different wear pattern to the rest of the carcass, and so, it is obvious to the trained eye.
 
In either case, still an absolutely stunning "antique" kneehole desk. An unadulterated original would set you back, at least, three times the price of this. And what an amazing piece of antique, and social, history. 
 
In excellent condition with a few minor marks, all commensurate with its age.
