A superb solid oak Arts & Crafts bookcase, early 20th century in date, with striking leaded astragal glazing and oak of exceptional quality. The grain is rich with medullary rays throughout - particularly prominent on the fall-front and doors.
The upper glazed section features two adjustable shelves behind leaded glass doors, with very slight ripples and imperfections from early glassmaking. The doors lock with a working key.
Below, a secrétaire section folds down to create a small writing surface, with internal compartments for stationery and writing implements. The fall is detailed with inlaid chevron motifs and showcases some of the finest oak figuring I’ve handled.
At the base, a two-door cupboard with single internal shelf sits on shaped bracket feet, again with chevron inlay to the doors. This is a single-piece construction and does not break down for transport.
Condition Report
Excellent overall condition. The fall has minor warping due to natural movement in the timber - it remains functional, though requires slight pressure at the centre when locking. A small historic repair to the cornice is well blended and barely visible. Some minor ink staining inside the secrétaire compartment. The lower cupboard is fully functional, though the pull ring from one door handle is missing. Structurally solid throughout and displays beautifully.
The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.
