What an absolute stunner! This Victorian kidney back chair is a masterclass in craftsmanship, with octagonal baluster front legs leading to a scalloped skirt, revealing an inverted baluster that seems to terminate on a fine ball. And in rosewood, no less!
This exquisite chair bears the label of John Kipling, "CABINET MAKER, UPHOLSTERER, & CO, BONDGATE, DARLINGTON"—a highly respected Victorian cabinet maker known for his quality work, and it’s easy to see why. The kidney back features a beautifully carved tulip cross splat, while the seat is upholstered in a rich blue fabric, finished with complementary beading.
Condition Report
In excellent condition, with a historic repair to one of the back legs and a couple of minor scuffs to the front corner moulding - nothing that detracts from its charm. The chair is absolutely solid, good for another 150 years, and the seat is beautifully clean.
