About Steven Swann
Antiques
Steven Swann is a Southampton-based dealer specialising in antique furniture and decorative pieces, selected for their craftsmanship, character, and ability to sit comfortably within modern interiors.
The business began in 2020, though the interest behind it has been developing for far longer. Initially working under a different name, I began by buying and selling a broad mix of furniture while learning the trade through hands-on experience, restoration, and sourcing.
Over time, my focus naturally narrowed towards 17th to early 20th century furniture — pieces where traditional handcraftsmanship, proportion, and material quality are still clearly visible. That interest is rooted less in formality and more in process: how something was made, why it has survived, and how it continues to function within a lived-in space.
I wouldn’t claim to be the finished article. The appeal of antiques, for me, is that there is always more to understand. Each piece presents its own questions — about construction, authenticity, use, and history — and that ongoing learning is part of what keeps the work engaging.
Alongside dealing, I also restore and prepare pieces for sale, drawing on a long-standing interest in traditional woodworking and hand tool techniques. That practical side of the work remains central; it is often through restoration that a piece properly reveals itself.
While the core of the business remains antique furniture and decorative objects, there is an increasing focus on how these pieces sit within interiors as a whole.
Collected Interiors is an ongoing project exploring homes, workshops, studios, and working spaces shaped by antiques, craftsmanship, and personal collections. From private interiors and dealer spaces to functional working environments, it documents how objects gain meaning through use, placement, and context.
This direction reflects a broader interest: not only in individual pieces, but in the environments they help create.

01
Where I Work
Based in Southampton, Hampshire, I operate primarily online through the website and Instagram, with stock stored and photographed in a dedicated space. Viewings are available by appointment.
02
Approach
My approach is straightforward: select well-made, honest pieces with character, restore them where necessary, and pass them on to be used again.
I tend to favour furniture that shows evidence of traditional construction — pieces that feel resolved in their design rather than overworked. Seating and storage have always been consistent interests, along with more primitive forms where utility and craftsmanship are clearly aligned.
The aim is not volume, but selection.
03
Perspective
Antiques continue to evolve with the wider world. The way people buy, sell, and research objects has changed significantly, particularly with the rise of online platforms and social media. That shift has made the trade more accessible, but also more competitive and more transparent.
For me, that is a positive development. It keeps the work grounded and ensures that interest is driven by the object itself rather than tradition alone.
Ultimately, antiques work best when they are used. A good piece should not feel like an exhibit; it should feel like part of a home.
Closing Note
This business has grown gradually, shaped by both interest and experience rather than a single fixed plan. It continues to evolve in the same way - through buying, restoring, learning, and refining what I choose to work with.
That process is far from finished.
