1995 Oil On Canvas – the Battle Of Trafalgar - After Mayer

This stunning oil on canvas captures the pivotal moments before the French battleship Redoutable was commandeered during the Battle of Trafalgar on October 22, 1805. The dramatic scene showcases the ship engaged in ferocious combat with HMS Victory - a duel that nearly resulted in Victory's capture, if not for the timely arrival of reinforcements. It was during this heated exchange that Lord Admiral Nelson was fatally wounded, cementing this event in naval history.

Painted in 1995 by J. Frigot, the piece bears a note on the reverse: "The Battle of Trafalgar - After A.E.F. Mayer. Musée de la Marine, Paris." However, the original painting by Mayer is titled "The Battleship Redoutable under Commander Lucas." This discrepancy - a sign of pre-Google research - is part of the painting’s unique charm.

Presented in an ornate giltwood frame, this artwork is not only a beautiful decorative piece but also a fascinating historical narrative.
