George III Mahogany Bachelor’s Kneehole Desk
This rich mahogany George III kneehole desk is a beautifully proportioned late 18th-century piece, featuring a central cupboard flanked by two sets of three graduated drawers, all sitting below a single long drawer. The top folds forward, resting on a pair of lopers - classic bachelor’s desk functionality. And just look at that patination and wear - exactly what we want in a piece of this age!
The big question: Is it the real deal? Many of these kneehole desks began life as chests of drawers, only to be converted by Victorian and early 20th-century restorers. But after giving this a thorough once-over, I believe this to be a genuine period piece. The depth, the construction, and the wear all point to an authentic 18th-century bachelor’s desk, rather than a later adaptation.
Condition Report
A few minor historic repairs that only add to its charm. The top has a number of minor marks and one larger scratch, and the front door panel has a split with a historic repair. Altogether, In excellent antique condition. A stunning and versatile piece with real presence.
