Victorian Oil On Canvas - Our Lady Of Perpetual Help, C. 1884–1896
A striking late Victorian oil painting on canvas depicting Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the celebrated Byzantine image of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child.
The composition follows the traditional iconography, showing the Christ Child clinging to his mother's hands while turning towards the instruments of the Passion, held by the flanking archangels. The Virgin and Child are depicted with elaborate painted crowns, accompanied by traditional Greek inscriptions and the identifying symbols of the sacred figures.
Unlike the more formal treatment of traditional icons painted on wooden panels, this version presents the figures with a softer, more naturalistic quality, while retaining the distinctive symbolism and solemn character of the original image.
The reverse bears a historic maker's stamp for Geo. Rowney & Co., 64 Oxford Street and Princes Hall, Piccadilly, London. The address is consistent with a late Victorian date, suggesting a likely date of circa 1884–1896. The painting is unsigned.
A devotional painting with considerable visual character, suited to a traditional interior, a study or a collection of religious and historical art.
Condition Report
The painting remains in unrestored antique condition, with extensive craquelure consistent with age. There are localised areas of minor paint flaking and historic surface loss, most notably in the upper-right background. These areas would benefit from professional conservation. The painting is offered in its present condition, retaining its original aged surface and character.
