Walla Brook Clapper Bridge – Oil On Canvas, C.1900 - Charles Baptiste Schreiber
A charming late 19th-century oil on canvas depicting the famous clapper bridge over Walla Brook in Dartmouth with ponies standing on either side of the brook. The bridge itself is a single slab of granite spanning the brook, a scene beautifully captured in this piece. On the back of the painting, there’s a small printed map and description of the trail leading to Walla Brook, along with multiple attributions to Charles Baptiste Schreiber (1845-1903) - although unsigned and undated. The artwork comes with two photographs taken at different times, both showing the painting being brought back to the original viewpoint where it was likely created - an intriguing bit of history to accompany the piece. The painting is housed in a solid pine frame.
Condition Report
In excellent antique condition. The canvas is taut and free from damage. A gentle clean would likely enhance the colours, removing years of dust buildup.
