Absolutely love this. A "Jacobean style" chest of 4 long drawers in solid oak. Paneled and pinned, and in two parts. Features a three plank top secured with nails and finished with a concave cornice, split turnings, along with gorgeous oak mouldings to the drawer fronts. Rose headed nails used throughout. All standing on heavy bracket feet. Original oil based stain and finish, and has had a good wax Polish.
The drawer construction is primative, with rebated bearings and crude through dovetails concealed by mouldings to the drawers fronts. The drawer backs are butt joints held with nails, as are the bases, which run front to back.
A difficult one to age, but I would say circa mid-18th century to early 19th.
Condition Report
Considering this is at least 200 years old, it is in superb condition. That said, it does have some wear to the drawer runners, splits to some of the drawer bases and paneling, as to be expected. The bearings for the rebated runners have long since been removed and replaced with lower bearings, and these show the wear one would expect. Some very minors losses to one of the turned split moulildings. The pulls are not original, but certianly antiques. A very usable, functional antique piece.
