A substantial and highly decorative Victorian rosewood sideboard of exceptional quality, bearing the maker’s plaque for James Shoolbred & Co, one of the most respected cabinet-makers of the late Victorian period and holders of a Royal Warrant from the mid-1880s.
The sideboard is arranged with three lockable cupboards and three display shelves, two backed with original Victorian bevelled mirrors and enclosed behind a balustrade-supported rail - creating a strong architectural presence. The cupboard doors are richly inlaid with classical urns and flowing swags, set within acanthus-carved fielded panels. The central cupboard is larger in scale and fitted with an internal shelf, offering practical storage alongside the decorative detail. This sideboard features inlaid boxwood stringing throughout.
This is a confident, visually engaging piece that exemplifies the ambition and craftsmanship of high Victorian furniture, with real presence whether placed in a dining room or as a statement storage piece.
Condition Report
Originally part of a larger piece and would once have had a top section, now long since lost. Minor evidence of this remains, with discreetly filled holes to the top. Very small chips to the rear edge and light foxing to the mirrors, along with minor wear to the front edge — all consistent with age. Overall presented in very good antique condition, retaining strong colour, structure, and detail.
