An exceptional mid-Victorian chest or linen press, in oak. Combining storage and craftsmanship in a thoughtful, architectural form. The piece features two short drawers over a long drawer, above a cupboard enclosing four linen press drawers and a concealed compartment.
The cupboard doors are tri-panelled and carved with acanthus motifs, while the drawers retain their original brass pulls and tramline detailing. Construction throughout is of notably high quality, with pinned mortice-and-tenon panelling.
Of particular interest, the top right drawer side appears to be signed and dated by the maker — Edward [surname illegible], Oxford, 1861 — a rare and evocative survival.
Condition Report
Excellent solid condition. One cupboard door has later replacement hinges following an historic mounting failure; visible on close inspection from the right side only. Minor surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound and fully usable.
